Sugar has been around longer than you think. An average American eats about 130 pounds of sugar each year! In 1874, a pharmacist named Oliver Chase had been pondering of a candy that can change the world. He wanted to put candy in every American's mouth. Lauren Tarshis wrote the article “Death By Sugar” tells the reader candy and sugar is as bad as smoking because both can harm you and even kill you. Even today, sports drinks still contain a lot of sugar in them. People have even died from drinking sugary drinks (27,10). Although every American loves the sweet candy melting in their mouth, they don't realize how bad it is for you. Oliver Chase had an impact on how an American and a child eats candy. Oliver would sell a cheap medicine named lozenges, soon to be a candy. Lozenges were little circles that consisted of mashed up herbs, chemicals and other ingredients (24,2). People thought lozenges would reveal you headaches, runny noses and sore throats (24,2). His medicine didn't work very well so he made a candy named Chase Lozenges. Back then in the 1800’s candy wasn't as bad. People would eat healthier. In 1801, an average American eats about 8 pounds of sugar a year. Today an average American eats about 130 pounds of sugar every year (27,7)! By 2015, the American drinks as twice as much as we did in the 1970s (27,9)! We are drinking different kinds of sodas and sports drinks. A sports drink today contains one teaspoons less than you could should consume in one day. That's a lot of sugar. A teen shouldn't eat no more than six teaspoons of sugar a day (27,2). A sports drink has five teaspoons of sugar and a soda has thirteen teaspoons. Soda has twice as many teaspoons of sugar that you are limited to. How can we make candy healthier and use better
