David G. Phillips is best known for his work “The Treason of the Senate,” which was a collection of articles that appeared in the Cosmopolitan in 1906. However, these articles would not have been possible without him having gained a reputation for being a reliable and competent investigative journalist. He gained his reputation by writing freelance works for many different magazines, while being supported by his earlier novel, The Great God Success. Many of his novels commented on social issues as well, which garnered him an even larger reputation.
