It often comes as a surprise to see someone, that we think is a gentle, caring and loving type of person do something that we would never expect them to solely because they’ve been holding back their anger or because no one seems to listen to them. This is the case with Daniel McGowan. Daniel McGowan is a man considered to be an “eco-terrorist” because he acts against the laws of his state in a violent manner in an effort to protect the environment. Because of his violent ways, which includes property damage and is limited to physical violence against others, Daniel McGowan was sentenced to 7 years in prison with the terrorism enhancement after a “communique released anonymously by the Earth Liberation Front following the fire threatened the…show more content…
This is preposterous. I say that because, part of being an adult is being able to have self-control or rather conduct yourself in a proper and responsible manner – something that the state does not expect minors to be able to do and results in restrictions. Adults are expected to be able to perfectly exercise restraint, control of themselves and be able to find a different way of expressing themselves if they are not being acknowledged in the way that they wish to be. If Daniel was unable to do so and committed these crimes as a major, he is expected to be handled as such in a court of law in correlation to his felonies and if that means incarceration, then so be it. Thoroughly put, just because Daniel McGowan is deemed a cool, calm and collected person, does not mean he should be given a lighter sentence than anyone…show more content…
In the case of Daniel McGowan, as seen by his incarceration – though he finally got his point across – he did, for one; end up harming the environment himself and he also harmed the lives of others, even if not physically, because of the fires. Since these fires did harm these people’s business’, they are either forced to either fix their property or leave it, in which, both cost money. Being a victim of arson is one of the things people least expect within the crimes of vandalism. Normally, if property has been vandalized, it is expected to have been graffiti or some sort of bettering type of destruction, sometimes even “value vandalism” (denouncing something in order to control the opinion of people to be against that item) is more expected than arson. Sparking the fear that someone may, at any point and time, destroy somebody’s property in an attempt to prove a point to someone else or to just a general set of people including the victim, is an act of terrorism.
