What does it take to become a criminal defense lawyer? A criminal defense lawyer, also known as a defense attorney, is a lawyer specializing in defense of individuals and companies charged with criminal conduct. I plan on going to college when I graduate high school to become a criminal defense lawyer. There are a lot of requirements and test I have to take in order to even get into law school. For example, I have to go to college for 7 years, 4 years at a university and 3 years of law schooling. According to CollegeforTn.org lawyers represent clients in criminal and civil situations and other legal proceedings, draw up legal documents, or manage or advise clients on legal transactions. In order to represent clients in federal courts, a criminal lawyer must first apply for admission to practice in that court (Lawyeredu.org.). Collegefortn.org says a lawyer role is to represents clients in court or before government agencies, presents evidence to defend clients or prosecute defendants in criminal or civil litigation, selects jurors, argues motions, meets with judges and question witnesses during the course of a trial, and studies constitution, statutes, decisions, regulations, and ordinances of quasi-judicial bodies to determine the complication of the cases (Xap.). Lawyeredu.org says a criminal lawyer must hold a juris doctorate and an attorney license in order to practice criminal law. Experience in criminal law is suitable before attaining a job as a criminal lawyer. However, major clinical experience may be associated with some criminal law experience for a recent graduate. Or participation in training, volunteer jobs or part-time jobs with public defenders and prosecutor offices can be the necessary work experience required (Lawyeredu.org). The "Wealth, power, and attorney regulation in the U.S. States: license entry and maintenance requirements." states that the process of becoming a lawyer and maintaining a law license is subject to state regulation. Each state requires some level of training or education, and the passage of a licensing exam, whether in the state of admission or in some other state or jurisdiction. The procedure usually involves obtaining a four-year college degree from an undergraduate institution, plus a three-year law degree from an accredited law school, and passing a statewide competency examination called the bar exam (Howard, Robert M.).
