The teachers Roald Dahl presents have two different characteristics and behaviour towards teaching whereas the teacher Charles Dickens also presents has both the behaviour and characteristics as captain Hardcastle and Corkers. Roald Dahl and Charles Dickens uses the appearance of the characters to reflect their behaviour to the reader. Captain Hardcastle's hair is " so straight it could have only been done with a ruler" this shows his self discipline and it means that he sets really high standards. If " it could have only have been done with a ruler" suggests that he is a very precise person and that he cares about the way he looks; this also relates to the military background that he has. Whereas Corkers was described as having " drooping bloodhound cheeks" this metaphor shows that he has saggy cheeks just like a dog and that he is old.…show more content…
Corkers lessons were described as "an endless series of distractions" this implies that his lessons were fun and exciting meaning they didn't do much work on mathematics. Furthermore, this tells us that corkers is a very clever person because he is making the children learn something without them actually knowing that their learning it. The word " endless" means going on forever so that suggests that corkers is always trying to make his lessons fun and make sure that he doesn't do much of mathematics. On the other hand Wackford Squeers has another approach to the way he teaches, he makes them do chores. You can find this in the quote "he's cleaning the back parlour window" this suggests that he makes all the children do chores and makes them clean the school instead of teaching them something. In addition to that he can't spell "b-o-t, bot, t-i-n, bottin, n-e-y, bottinney" this means that he is not that clever so by making the children do the chores it's like a distraction to the fact that he has a limited amount of
