Of Mice and Men, a beautifully written novella by John Steinbeck, illustrates the realization of life in the 1930’s through Lennie and George and their aspirations, along with the obstacles that are detrimental to their ambition. They are friends, migrant workers, but above all, family as the travel the country in search and hopes of achieving their dream. That dream, in fact, is one we all hope to achieve, a “ place where we belonged ” said by George. Of the many theme in Of Mice and Men, the preeminent thesis consist of being about the futility of the American dream. Racism, ageism, sexism, and the mentally disabled were all affected by this perception, which limits their full potential and inevitably, their dream, the American dream. This disruption in power made many of the Nguyen 2 characters in Of Mice and Men unable to pursue their goal. And thus, this viewpoint made dreams an impossibility within the novel. Finally, the last reason the American dream is impossible to achieve within this story lies in the fact that life is coarse, being a migrant worker, an old man, a lady, and an African American, and having a preposterous dream such as suddenly become an actor is not going to occur. No matter how hard you believe or expect it to happen, chances do not mysteriously appear and grant you an options to change your life. Reality is harsh, and life is unforgiving,make your own pathway, don’t receive them. Of Mice and Men is truly a spectacular book that deals with human perception, and many of the harsh reality of life. It allows people to understand and take a view into other’s life and face the fact that not all dreams are going to come true. It delivers the theme of an impossible American dream, a truly realistic idea as all of the characters within Of Mice And Men failed to reach their
