As the first of the two protagonists of My Neighbor Totoro, Satsuki provides a lovely contrast to her baby sister, Mei. While both girls are still young, innocent, fun loving and not hardened by the harsh realities of the world yet; Satsuki represents a girl who is on the verge of discovering the latter. By virtue of her being older than Mei, she has to contend with school, boys and learning to grasp the concept of developing a more informed understanding of the ways of the world.
