Beowulf, a great hero, fulfilled the expectations of a hero portrayed in outsider’s eyes by defeating his opponents in his three famous battles. Although Beowulf won all these battles they were very different from one another. The method that Beowulf approached them, tactics used during, and the result at the end of each battle all differed. In addition to the battles the “trophies” he obtained were all very different. “Beowulf’s followers rode, mourning their beloved leader, crying that no better king had ever lived, no prince so mild, no man so open to his people, so deserving of praise.” (893-897) This quote shows that even though Beowulf was born a hero, he died an even greater hero whom was admired by his peers. The first battle was between Beowulf and Grendel. Grendel was a dark monster who was killing and then eating the civilians of Herot. Beowulf would not stand for a monster murdering people, in result he lured Grendel into his fighting grounds by using one of his own soldiers as bait; there was a great amount of thought behind this battle. Beowulf knew he could not slay the monster with any kind of tool so his only option was to use his bare hands. Grendel had never met someone that he feared, so “Grendel’s one thought was to run from Beowulf, flee back to his marsh and hide there” (755-756).…show more content…
“ When he comes to me, I mean to stand, not run from his shooting Flames, stand till fate decides, which of us wins,” (619-622). The heroic trait shown through this quote defines the selflessness that Beowulf possessed. Although Beowulf entered with an army, he battled with one man by the name of Wiglaf. The two men put up a tremendous fight against the giant beast. Beowulf put the town before himself, which was an act of selflessness. Together, Beowulf and Wiglaf, defeated the dragon and were able to claim the treasure as their own, on the other hand; Beowulf heroic journey came to an
