Robert Fulton and Robert Livingston invented a steamboat in the state of New York, and obtained a license to operate the steamboat on the waterways of New York. The license was issued by the New York legislature, and was valid for 20 years exclusively to Fulton and Livingston only. The license also granted the right to permit other licenses off of the original license given to Fulton and Livingston. Fulton and Livingston granted a license to Aaron Ogden first to solely operate a steamboat up and down the Hudson River. Ogden decided to get a partner, Thomas Gibbons, to help with the steamboat, but later in the partnership Gibbons decides that he can no longer agree or can comply with the arrangement between himself and Ogden.
