Sandy Hook Elementary and Columbine High School are the locations of two of the most deadly and infamous school shootings in the United States. The Columbine High School Massacre, as the public calls it, took place on April 20, 1999. The perpetrators were two high school seniors, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, who shot and killed more than twelve students and one teacher. Twenty-one additional people were severely injured (Lamb). The Sandy Hook Massacre occurred on December 14, 2012 in Newtown, Connecticut when Adam Lanze, twenty year old son of one of the first grade teachers in the elementary school, fatally shot twenty children under that age of seven, and six adult staff members (Barron). Houston had graduated from Lindhurst High School two years prior, but deemed it reasonable to come back and seek revenge on his teachers that failed him (Mills). In the 90’s, most schools didn’t take the right security procedures to keep the school safe, like insisting on locking the doors during the school day, having a secure lock down drill, and school ID tags. These reasons are why Eric Houston got through high school doors undetected to shoot less than a handful of people. He shot the civics teacher, Robert Brens, who failed him by one point during his senior year (Mills). Another three students were killed during the eight-hour time. Many children, when beginning their school years, do not think about the dangers that come with going to a very public school every single day. Since the late 1990s, many schools in the United States have increased security dramatically but the school shooting rate has only dropped a measly 2% since 1995 (Despite).
