Mr. President, our committee’s plan to help you come up to speed on college athletics and the state of the athletic department centers on the University’s desire to utilize athletic participation to enhance the education of our students and to parlay a successful athletics program to build a strong community and sense of pride in and connection to our beloved University. First and foremost, we believe it is imperative to build and maintain a strong partnership between the University administration and the athletic administration and work together to solve the various issues that surround college athletics. It is important for you to be aware of some key issues surrounding athletics because there are huge stakes for running an intercollegiate athletics program properly, multiple forces that are pulling intercollegiate sports away from the University, and missteps are often sensationalized as headline news by the sports media. Savvy public relations and timely University communications will be necessary. Our athletics programs attract more public visibility than any other university activity, with hundreds of thousands of spectators attending our athletic events and millions more listening and watching on television, radio and the internet across the globe. Our University receives far more attention in the media for our athletics events than it does for our classroom or laboratory activities. It is important to understand that athletic participation is a way for university students to grow, learn and enjoy themselves throughout their college experience. Athletics should be a part of students’ education and not their sole reason for being here. We believe that athletes should be participants in intercollegiate competition rather than professional performers in public spectacles. Our athletes should be representative of our student body, and should be held to the same academic standards as our other students. There should be a strong oversight to the academic achievement and advancement of our athletes and an emphasis on a proper balance to their academic, social and athletic lives. Some of our peer universities seem to take advantage of their student-athletes, exploiting their athletic talents for financial gain and public visibility, and tolerating low graduation rates and meaningless degrees in majors like general studies or independent studies. The perceived pressure to win at all costs can lead to a neglectful attitude toward the academic opportunity for which our University exists, or worse, academic fraud and scandal. The tracking of admitted number of student-athletes, student-athlete GPAs, and the measurement of graduation rates compared to the general student population should be monitored
