The Crusades took place from 1096 up until 1291” (Cole and Symes). The purpose of the Crusades was for the Christians to reobtain the Holy Land. Christian Byzantine Empire was being attacked by Muslim Seljuk Turks” (Cole and Symes). The Europeans captured Jerusalem in 1099. The Muslims came together against the Christians who were invading the Holy Land. The Crusades was about religious devotion rather than any other competing factors. The Islamic lifestyle was constantly spreading. Muslim was spreading so fast, it was competition for Christianity. Many Christians were being violently threatened near Jerusalem. Christians who joined the Crusade were granted with redemption” (Cole and Symes). The motive for the Crusade was religiously motivated. As the French monk Guilbert of Nogent wrote in his twelfth century chronicle of the Crusades, “God has instituted in our time holy wars, so that the order of knights and the crowd running in its wake… might find a new way of gaining salvation.
