Location The absolute location of the Coastal Plains Region is between 26o and 34o latitude, and inside the area between 98o and 101o longitude. The relative location of this region is north of the Gulf of Mexico, south of Oklahoma, and east of Fort Worth and Austin and San Antonio, which are on the Western border of the region. Agriculture The main crops of the Coastal Plains Region consist of varied fruits and vegetables, including corn, peanuts, pecans, watermelons, and peaches. Other main crops include hay, rice, cotton, and various grains, including grain sorghum. This region has good, productive soil, and long growing season. Business and Industry There are many different businesses and industries in the Coastal Plains Region. Some common examples are ranching, trade, tourism, oil, petroleum, lumber, crops, banking, cattle farming, shipping, warehousing, and education. Some cities grew up around oil fields, which are an extremely important part of Texas history. Other cities get a good part of their income through cotton. There are also many petrochemical-related industries. Many of them turn oil or natural gas into items like gasoline, plastic, synthetic rubber, antifreeze, and fertilizer. Houston is home to the Johnson Space Center, which has made many scientific advances.…show more content…
Winds from the Gulf of Mexico pick up moisture and scatter it over the area. At the least, this region gets about 30 in. of rain a year. The temperatures here can reach up to about 105oF (34oC) and plummet to negative Fahrenheit. Sometimes, in drought, this region can get very dry, and not many crops can grow.
