Personal Career Timeline Sarah Bauer Grand Canyon University 9/24/14 Personal Career Timeline Finding the perfect career to suit her personality, hopes, and dreams has been a preoccupation of this writer from a young age. Her parents instilled the importance of following her passion and fulfilling her purpose in life, which proved to be both a blessing and a curse! Knowing that finding a life of meaning is crucially important to one’s happiness can be a heavy burden as a child. At the same time, a lifetime of self-examination has led the writer to what she feels is the occupation she was specifically designed for, being a therapist. Only through assessing her strengths, weaknesses, and general temperament was she able to discover her true passion for counseling. What she did not know was that John Holland’s theory of occupational themes would have been a helpful guidepost to come to this realization quicker.…show more content…
He examined the way individuals with different styles of relating to the world seemed to group together in certain occupations. His personality typology theory involves learning as much about yourself as possible, so that your unique traits can propel you into the career choice where you will feel most fulfilled. In matching one’s abilities and personal preferences, this theory proposes that those who use the trait and factor approach will have greater job satisfaction. John Holland’s typology theory uses what he calls the “modal personal style”, which categorized 6 occupational environments, and 6 personal styles. Holland personality styles were categorized as follows: realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional (Zunker, 2012).
