Goodnight Moon, written by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Clement Hurd, is a story about a little Rabbit’s bedtime routine. Before he goes to sleep the personified Rabbit goes through objects in his room while he is in bed, to say goodnight to them before he can go to sleep himself. As the story continues and as the Rabbit is saying goodnight, he gets more tired and the room becomes darker, before finally falling asleep with “Goodnight noises everywhere” (Wise Brown & Hurd, 1947). Goodnight Moon is a simple story in which its goal is to get children comfortable with a bedtime routine. It is a work of realistic fiction because while the characters are rabbits, there are common personified tendencies in the actions and dialogue of the characters which parallel in the readers world. These tendencies and qualities are shown in the rabbit being tucked into bed, saying goodnight to objects around the room, and the presence of a telephone, clock, balloon. This book transforms into an adventure through the use of the illustrations allowing the child to look for the objects in the room which the rabbit is saying goodnight to. The text also appears in orange font in blue bubbles on the colored pages and in bold black font on the non colored pages (as shown in figures 1&2) This allows the text to be easily seen amongst the illustrations. Goodnight Moon is also a tool for early readers, as it demonstrates rhyming to help readers associate similar sounds in different words. These rhyming patterns are on the same page allowing for easy visual comparison between them.The format of the text is similar to a poem but does not follow the typical scheme used in other childrens bedtime
