The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time a novel written by Mark Haddon in 2003. The novel portrays the story of Christopher Boone a boy who suffers from Asperger’s. We are shown that Christopher suffers from autism as he Mark Haddon gradually gives us Information to make the readers believe and assume that he has autism. During the course of the novel we are shown that Christopher creates change in himself and in his personality. This happens through events that he experiences in which changes his perspective and views on his life. A change that happens to Christopher was the struggles of being independent. As of his disorder we are shown that Christopher obsesses over everything having to be perfect as he is always making charts and describing in very large detail the experiences he takes part in every day. We see that at the end of the novel he still becomes comfortable by explaining in detail what has happened to him. We see this when he explains that his father had bought him a new dog as he draws up the picture of a smiley face (Haddon. 2003. Pp.267). We are shown this as his mind sees differently to what we do which this novel gives us a unique perspective into what thoughts he is thinking and how he acts to certain situations. At the start of the book Christopher has trouble understanding facial expressions and how he is supposed to understand and react to certain situations. An example of this is ‘she showed me this picture and I knew that this meant happy. Then she showed me some other pictures, but I was unable to say what these meant’ (Haddon. 2003. Pp.2). This shows that he has trouble understanding certain facial reactions people give him which makes it difficult for him to understand. Throughout the book we are shown that Christopher does not understand this. We are shown this when his father finds his investigation book on the kitchen table and confronts Christopher about it. Christopher cannot understand that his father was angry as his expressions were not portraying the angry mood in which he had learnt from his teacher. ‘I didn’t realise he was angry because he wasn’t shouting’ (Haddon. 2003. Pp.101). This shows that Christopher still found it hard to understand facial expressions and reactions and that he could not change this even after extensive help from his
