For example, the law states that a Chinese laborer must have a lawful wife, family or valuable property in America, so that he would return from China. However, the social reality was that the bachelor society occurred in the Chinese communities in America. Because of the restriction on female immigrants, it was impossible that every Chinese laborer had his lawful family living in America. Some Chinese immigrants were brought by “paper son”. In addition, majority of Chinese laborers were young and poor bachelors, they did not own any valuable properties in America.
