Charles the Great, also known as Charlemagne, reigned as King of the Franks from 768 to 814. He gained great power and influence during his life, building on a unique foundation of the large territory he controlled, a creative marriage policy, a close relationship with the clergy, and a successful army. He was known as a fierce warrior, but was simultaneously very wise. He was an intelligent statesman who greatly expanded his empire during his reign. He spoke Latin, and although he could read, he could not write. His favorite book was City of God. Charlemagne had an intellectual curiosity and a great judgment of people that led him to make very wise decisions when choosing advisors. He was considered to be very religious, however,
