In this article Joseph Torgesen expresses not just his strong opinions about what successful reading instruction looks like he also cites several studies supporting those opinions. Torgesen opens with the beginning of his downward spiral theme explaining how poor readers in fourth grade exhibited poor phonological skills in kindergarten. He continues to send the reader further down the spiral by stating that deficits in fluency make it exceedingly more difficult for those readers to catch up by the time they enter the fourth grade. This fact seems obvious once he explains how impaired fluency increases the time spent decoding words, and decreases the amount of time left for comprehension.
