Character Identification Major Characters Odysseus- Odysseus is the protagonist of the book The Odyssey. He is the King of Ithaca which is an island on the coast of Greece. He is a very powerful ruler with strength, and confidence. Odysseus is very intelligent which helps him defeat Troy with the Greek army. On his voyage home, he has a very troubling and long journey. Odysseus is a typical hero in any sort of literature, however, he is full of enough pride that he ends up making stupid decisions. One of the weaknesses that Odysseus has is the problem with him falling asleep at times when he is needed most. Penelope- The wife of Odysseus and the mother of Telemachus. She is very patient with Odysseus trying to get married so that she can also rule over the land of Ithaca. She remains faithful to Odysseus while he is away proving her endurance along with her love for her husband and son.…show more content…
Telemachus was just a small child when Odysseus went to the Trojan War. Telemachus starts off as a helplessly unhappy man, but as he starts to search for his father, he begins to mature. Telemachus continues to aid Odysseus upon his return home. Athena- Athena is the goddess of wisdom and war who has feelings for Odysseus. She does not help in the slaughter of the suitors except for transforming Odysseus so that he will not be recognized.
