Within the religion of Wicca, followers are encouraged to create and believe in their own personal ideas, while upholding the religion’s traditional practices. Is it possible, that in the Wiccan society, because all sexual orientations are welcomed, when one chooses to be deliberately celibate, other Wiccans look negatively towards them? Wiccan rules do not support any animosity towards celibacy, yet celibacy by choice is almost unheard of in Wiccan practice. Sex plays a very important role in the processes of worship within most circles. A member who chooses not to have sex within a religion that thrives on sexual acts deviates from Wiccan norms. Therefore all forms and expressions of sexuality, as long as they are otherwise healthy and consensual, are accepted. Celibacy, the act of abstaining from sexual relations, falls along the lines of being accepted in Wiccan culture. It is not specifically denoted in any rules of Wicca. Celibacy is rarely conversed about in any Wiccan practices. Because celibacy is so rare within this religion, the issue of the religious ethics of celibacy arises. To better understand what Pagans find ethical, one must understand the beliefs of Wiccan religion. No two branches or groups of Wicca are perfectly alike. Each tradition has its’ own mythology on the creation of the world, depending on what they believe. Some Wiccans are duo theists, where their cosmology theory revolves around one God and one Goddess. Other Wiccans are polytheists, worshipping Gods from various pantheons. Several Wiccan communities believe in the scientific, Big bang theory. Because the Wiccan religion is modern itself, and there aren’t strict and precise rules on how pagans must practice, there is a broad and diverse moral stance on celibate members. The Wiccan religion is sexual. Most traditional Wiccans worship the God and Goddess. Traditional Wiccan covens aspire to having equal numbers of men and women, to embody their belief in the importance of balance between the male and female, which extends sexually. “People in this culture are encouraged to seek out relationships before they really come to know themselves, their desires, their goals.”
