In both “The Fall of the House of Usher” and in “Where is Here?” the setting is very important. Each story opens with a visual of a house. These houses are very important as they set the mood for the upcoming events in the plot. The mood of a story is necessary to captivate the reader. In both of these stories the mood is dark and very gothic. With this knowledge we can see how the settings of both of these stories come into play. These houses really set the scene and create mood. Both the house in “Where is Here?” and in “The Fall of the House of Usher” allow the reader to grasp the gothic tone. The first point that allows us to grasp the mood that is set through setting are the adjectives used to describe them. In “The Fall of the House of Usher”, on page 294 it reads, “I looked upon the scene before me—upon the mere house, and the simple landscape features of the domain—upon the bleak walls—upon the vacant eyelike windows—upon a few rank sedges—and upon a few white trunks of decayed trees—with an utter depression of soul.” Words like; bleak, vacant, rank, decayed and depression help to create a fearful tone. I had so worked upon my imagination as really to believe that about the whole mansion and domain there hung an atmosphere peculiar to themselves and their immediate vicinity—an atmosphere which had no affinity with the air of heaven.” This character also noticed the feeling that the setting had produced.
