In the story Wieland, one of the many characters in the novel possesses a special ability that remains unknown to the other characters, as well as the reader for a majority of the plot. The use of this ability causes many different complications to many of the other characters. The one character Carwin has the ability to mimic voices, and make them sound as if they are coming from various different locations, and distances. Throughout the story Carwin’s use of ventriloquism causes the other characters many unwanted problems, such as the separation of Pleyel and Clara, as well as causing some characters to question their sense and sanity. If Carwin’s use of ventriloquism had not been used on the characters the outcome of the story could have been much different. One scenario, this can be seen is when Carwin had remained hidden in Clara’s closet. Clara had been unable to sleep, and had a suspicion that there was something inside of her closet. As Clara went to open her closet a voice had spoken, “Hold! Hold!" were the words of this tremendous prohibition, in whose tone the whole soul seemed to be wrapped up, and every energy converted into eagerness and terror.” (Brown, 181) After this Carwin had stepped outside of the closet, and explained that the voice Clara had heard must have been a voice of something looking out for her. Carwin then explains that if Clara had not waited that Carwin had planned to steal her sexual innocence. After this event Clara questioned her sense, and if she could truly trust them. “Yet if a human being had been there, could he fail to have been visible? Which of my senses was the prey of a fatal illusion?” (Brown, 182) If Carwin had not deceived Clara she would never have questioned herself and remained the image of being
