One of the most widely known songs, “Feeling Good,” was originally composed for a forgotten musical, The Roar of the Greasepaint – The Smell of the Crowd. “Feeling Good” was covered by so many recognizable artists that most people have forgotten that Cy Grant was the original singer of this master piece. Covers such as the ones done by Carly Rose Sonenclar and Adam Lambert display the classic song in new and different ways. Carly Rose Sonenclar sang her own version of “Feeling Good” during an X Factor audition in 2012. The thirteen year old astonished the audience with her attitude, performance, and most importantly, her voice. Different from the original, Sonenclar put a modern, pop spin on the classically soulful song. However, Sonenclar’s mature voice brought life and soul to her performance. Upon the first verse, it was evident that Sonenclar was a brilliant artist. Nevertheless, the chorus is where she releases the poignant, soulful women trapped inside her. Simply listening to her sing brings chills to my skin. The quite musical accompaniment playing in the background allowed Sonenclar to belt several harmonies throughout the performance. Everyone has heard the slow, jazzy, and bluesy rendition, but Lambert provides a new version- rock. The song begins simply with piano and soon transitions into electric guitar. Up until the chorus, Lambert sings with a soft smooth voice. However, when the chorus hits many other instruments are introduced; adding a rock, or pop band feel. Lambert changes the pitch, rhythm, and tempo multiple times throughout the song; making the song rock and classic all at the same time.
