What do we know about blind people? Close your eyes and try to do something you do every day, like putting toothpaste on a toothbrush. You will soon realize how difficult it is to do things if you cannot see what you are doing. Blindness does not stop people from doing great things. Sometimes blind people sees more than non blind person. The cathedral story is very didactic story about how we should respect and understand blind person. It also gives us an example of how stereotyping is not all the time right, not all blind people are the same. In this story I found quite interesting topics such as literature languages, such as plot, analysis of major characters, and themes and symbols. The story starts with inviting a blind man to the narrator’s house and the narrator is not happy about this visitor and man’s blindness unsettles him. The blind man by name Robert was a friend with narrator’s wife for ten years and they had pretty close relationship with each other. She and the blind man kept in touch be sending audiotapes back and forth to each other throughout her marriage. The blind man just had lost his wife(Beulah) and the narrator thinks how hard was for Beulah to know that her husband could never look at her. When blind man arrives to their house the narrator sees that blind man has full bread and finds out his name(Robert). The narrator never known a blind person and he starts to describe what Robert looks like. The narrator has stereotyping looking to blind people such as blind people wear black glass, do not smoke, cannot property eat because of the blindness, however Robert can do all that things very professionally. They then eat and stares to talk about things that happened to them in past ten years. The narrator’s wife goes upstairs to change while that narrator offers Robert to smoke even though wife was mind. The narrator, Robert, and wife sit in sofa and wife falls asleep. The narrator and Robert were watching a television and narrator changes channel and there is the program going on about cathedral. Since Robert is blind the narrator stares describe a cathedral to him, but the narrator can not find any words to describe it because cathedral has no meaning to him. He does not believe in anything and therefore Robert asks narrator to find a piece of paper than they could draw a Cathedral. The narrator stares to draw a cathedral and Robert puts his hand over narrator and follows him and then he says to narrator to close his eyes and narrator does.
