“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself”(Joseph C.). A hero who always sacrifices himself for something bigger than himself is a man named Beowulf. We have read an adaptation of the epic poem Beowulf, which its author still remains a mystery. In addition, we viewed the film version of Beowulf directed by Robert Zemeckis. The reading version of Beowulf truly outshines how heroic he compares to the film. Beowulf in the text is shown to be more honorable than Beowulf in the film. In the reading when Beowulf's fight with Grendel's mother, he is not seduced by her unlike the movie. When Beowulf ventures into the cave in the reading, Beowulf meets Grendel's mother and kills her with no hesitation so everyone in the kingdom will remain safe. “He struck so angrily and with such savage strength that the monster's throat that the hard edge blade slashed into her neck”(229). Beowulf is shown to be strong willed and have the courage to protect others from her destruction. On the other hand, the film makes Beowulf dishonorable by not killing her so he can become king forever and untrustworthy because he lied to everyone that he killed Grendel mother. The film depicted the event as a turning point for Beowulf due to the fact that wealth tempted his gluttony. When Beowulf meets Grendel mother, she promises him that he will become king if he gives her the dragons cup and lie to the kingdom that he killed her. Beowulf is immediately intrigued by her deal and follows through her plan. This was an important piece to the film because it shows how a hero could become corrupt. The reading depicts the battle with Grendel's mother as a heroic event showing Beowulf's courage, however the film reveals to us how Beowulf can become fraudulent.
