The Effects from Storytelling The art of storytelling has been around for centuries of years for many reasons. It serves as much more than just some entertainment. Storytelling is very important because it gives information a meaning. It creates a connection between the audience and the teller. It can be used as a source of healing or motivation is one’s mind. Most importantly, storytelling can be shared among one another and passed on and on. As Marshall Alcorn Jr. and Mark Bracher say, storytelling can “promote greater tolerance of unfamiliar and potentially traumatic experiences”(344-345). In Beasts of the Southern Wild, Benh Zeitlin proves that storytelling is important by using it as a source of connection with the audience, a healing process, as well as a way of motivation. Hope gives people motivation. In the story, Hushpuppy and her father stayed as strong as they could be. Most people who lived in the community had left their torn homes and went to shelters where food and medication was provided. Having this, Hushpuppy and her father still wanted to live where their home was. They rejected the shelter. Her father taught her himself how to fend for herself. He taught her how to hunt for food and build shelter and they were happy just to be alive and able to take care of themselves in their home. In most situations, after a natural disaster, most people would be broken. Most people would go into shelter. Most people would give up on their homes. Hushpuppy, her father, and the others are not like most people. They didn’t give up even in the worst conditions. They had hope and love for their community so they stayed and moved on trying to rebuild and recover. This projects such an inspirational message to the audience. To learn about one’s experience, how they were knocked down and had to heal themselves, have hope, and move forward can truly create motivation for the
