The Taming of the Shew Essay Back in the Elizabethan Era fathers weren’t supposed to do too much for their daughters. In William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew Baptista Minola can be considered both a loving father and cruel opportunist. Baptista Minola is the father of both Katherine and Bianca. Bianca is a very attractive young female who a lot of men want, however her older sister Katherine is known as a very mean and a nasty feminist. Baptista is a wealthy resident of Padua, who is looking to wed his daughters. Bianca has many suitors, however she isn’t allowed to get married until the eldest daughter, Katherine, gets married first. But because of her personality, no one wants to marry her, well at least until Petruchio came. Baptista is indeed a loving father, but also a cruel opportunist. Due to Baptista’s actions when he was finding a suitor for Katherine, when he was looking for a suitor for Bianca, and lastly when he was trying to find tutors for his daughters. Granted, Baptista made sure that he found the right suitor for Katherine he can be considered a caring father. This back in the Elizabethan Era was considered going out of his way as a father, Baptista, reassured Petruchio, who is a suitor for Katherine, that he can only marry Katherine if there is real love…show more content…
This shows that he does care for his daughters as he cares about what they’re being taught. Although Baptista called Litio the music tutor he proceded to question him soon after he arrived, as he said “What, will my daughter prove a good musician” (II,i,151). This means he doesn’t think that his daughters learning music will benefit them in any substantial way. This shows that he cares for his daughter’s education and thinks that learning music is a waste of time. Because Baptista took into account what his daughters will be taught, and proceeded to question the music tutor, he proved to be a caring
