We can all remember being asked from a very young age, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I never could come up with an answer to that question, although I always knew I wanted to help people. If I had been asked that question again as a college freshman, I still wouldn’t have had a clear-cut response. Four years later, I can confidently say I know exactly what I want to be, why I want to be it, and how I am going to get there: I want to be an exceptional audiologist with a private practice specializing in aural rehabilitation for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. Earning a Doctorate in Audiology from the University of Washington will allow me to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively help people with hearing impairment.…show more content…
While I enjoyed most of the lower-level CSD classes, it wasn’t until my senior year that I became certain this is the career I want to pursue. During my final semester at the University of Minnesota Duluth, I was involved in a clinical internship at the Robert F. Pierce Speech, Language, and Hearing Clinic. The client that I was assigned had a profound binaural hearing loss and used a cochlear implant and a hearing aid. I was initially very apprehensive. Since this patient had been essentially deaf for over 60 years, he had very poor oral communication skills. After graduating, I completed a 3-month internship at Unitron Hearing US. I worked in every stage of hearing aid production from order entry to wiring to quality control. Along with gaining a comprehensive introduction to the manufacturing of hearing aids, I also absorbed a plethora of tips for optimal device selection, fitting, and performance. The internship was an extremely valuable experience that left me familiar with every stage in the life cycle of hearing aids.
