What is a classic? A classic is something judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality and outstanding of its kind. Have you ever heard of the term “classic novel?” A classic novel is a book that is accepted as being exemplary or noteworthy. These exemplary novels are created by forming characters that are truly exceptional. A great example of a classic novel is “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. There are many exceptional characters in this book that give the novel its true meaning. Atticus Finch is a fifty year-old lawyer in Maycomb, who lives with his two children Scout and Jem. Atticus displays respect for other people in Maycomb which makes him a respected character in this book. Atticus Finch is a well-developed character which makes him an effective protagonist. To begin with Atticus is a character in this book that was respected by the majority of people in Maycomb. Respect is needed in a proper relationship between a parent and their child. Atticus respected his children who in return respected him as their father. For instance after Scout had a talk with Atticus about her troubles in class with her teacher. She said, “Jem and I were (…) were at all times free to interrupt Atticus for a translation when it was beyond our understanding.”(Harper Lee) (pg.42) Scout clearly demonstrates that she is not afraid to ask Atticus for help and she respects his thoughts and opinions.
