The War of 1812 was an unexpected, but highly important and definitive win for America. The course of the war was considerably affected by the inexperience of a young America. This was partly due to the management of the republic. The nation was relatively undeveloped, its government too delicate and unproven to lead efficiently in a major war. Split political views also played a part in America’s problems. Federalists strongly opposed involvement in the war, as well as some Republicans. Even those who supported the war argued among themselves and never exhibited the sort of patriotic enthusiasm found in modern day America. War advocates appeared to more strongly support the idea of being at war rather than actually heading out to fight it or finance it. In the defense of Fort McHenry, increased American patriotism stood out most prominently with the willingness of the people to sink their own ships in order to not let the British navy reach the Maryland shores. The people of Fort McHenry risked their very own livelihoods to save all of the American people from having to pledge loyalty to the British crown. The war also produced its well-known share of heroes. Men whose reputations were enhanced by government service and were also eventually catapulted into presidency included Andrew Jackson, John Quincy Adams, James Monroe, and William Henry Harrison.
