1. In the language sample, the word *“haft” is spelled exactly like the student hears the words “have to” in spoken language. When those words are spoken in everyday conversation they are not pronounced separately, they are run together in speech although the written words are “ have to”. The word * “wite” is also spelled like the student hears the word “white”. The letter “h” is silent so the student spells the word white like they hear it without the “h”. As we learned in Yule, more than two consonants together are a consonant cluster (p. 46). “Wh” is a consonant blend because the “wh” together makes a single sound of /w/.
