In 14th century Europe, Italy was a collection of city-states, each with its own political, culture, and linguistic traditions. At that era, there were many fantastic composers, among them, one is particularly famous, Francesco Landini. He is the leading composer of ballate and the foremost ltalian composer. In this article, his work (Angelica bilta) will be used to compare with one of the old Gregorian chant (Viderunt Omnes from the Mass for Christmas Day), to show readers how music in different era were different in style, notation system and text type. Mass for Christmas Day is composed in the early 11th century. Although European society was agriculturally and politically more stabled than before and the status of music became more important, the writer for the mass for Christmas day remains unknown.
