For my "My Favourite Constellation" essay, i've chosen Andromeda, because the Greek myth is one of my favourites. Andromeda (or "The Chained Woman") is made up of seven stars, found by the Greco-Roman astronomer Ptolemy. It is supposed to depict Andromeda lying chained on her back, as you will see as the story follows; Andromeda was the daughter of King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia of Ethiopia. Cassiopeia was so proud of her daughter that she boasted that Andromeda was more beautiful than the immortal Nereids (sea nymphs). The Nereids became angry, and Posideon, as the god of the sea, sent a sea monster along with a flood to ravage the kingdom. A man named Ammon, who is believed to be a "wise man" (possibly a wizard Seer), told everyone that the flood would recede and the monster retreat if the princess was put out as bait for the monster. The king was reluctant, but the civillians were desperate for the calamity to end, so he followed Ammon's advice. Andromeda was chained to a rock near the sea, where the…show more content…
Andromeda was a fair maid, whose father was the King of their large kingdom. On her sixteenth birthday, her father decided it was time for her to marry. Andromeda refused - she wanted to stay free of the the control of men, as she was a very headstrong woman. Her father never spoke to her about it again - for if she got angry, she would use her power over fire to do a lot more than singe his mighty beard. Andromeda was born with the power - and used it seldom, after finding out what it could do. But she practised in secret. Her father may not have told her, but he was secretly searching for a suitor for his daughter. He tried, and tried again, to no avail - none would please her.
