Pope Francis’ speech to Congress was both inspirational and was meant to unite a heavily divided nation. He spoke of treating not only humanity, but the earth, with the love and dignity exhibited by Jesus. In addition, Francis instructs Congress to preoccupy themselves with protecting by any means necessary the gift of life. With the power rested upon them, they should preserve the image and likeness of God. He speaks of the freedom that was so heavily strived for by the likes of American heroes such as: Martin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln, Dorothy Day, and Thomas Merton. He tells us to remain in unfaltering effort in order to preserve the freedoms that this country was founded upon. However, he apprises us not to indulge in violence and brutal atrocities just for the sake of religion.
