Summary Of Thomas Paine's Common Sense
570 Words3 Pages
Thomas Paine in his Common Sense makes many early references to scripture. It can be noted however, that king David was a human being as well as those who were led by him. Paine focuses on the dastardly deeds of the people, “IN ASKING YOU A KING.” (Paine 12). Upon taking a closer look upon these texts, one finds that it was God Himself that saw it good to appoint a king to lead His people. While it was in part because the people cried out, “no! but set a king over us,” (1 Samuel 10: 19) yet God would not have done it if it were not part of His own Will, and all of us are to still follow the Will of God. Paine, in an attempt to further dispute the sovereignty of monarchs, glorifies the government the Israelites had when wandering the desert.
