What the Readers Response Really Means to the Reader! When writers create their published works they put a lot of effort into conveying a message to the reader. In People Like that Are the Only People Here by Lorrie Moore this is no different. Lorrie Moore does a fantastic job of making sure that her readers will make a personal connection in the text to their real lives and the world that they live in. Reader Response Theory focuses on the reaction from the reader and People Like that Are the Only People Here is no different, as it makes the reader identify and rationalize with the book. The message that I as a reader take away from People Like that Are the Only People Here is that one must be incredibly strong and both mentally and physically resilient when faced with difficulties in one’s life as some things are out of one’s control. The writer keeps a strong and interesting connection that makes a reader connect with the book while staying surprisingly distant…show more content… The father does a strong job of containing his emotions and internalizing them providing himself and his mother’s child with the support and comfort she needs. The mother as any natural person would do, does not take a rational approach and immediately becomes a nervous wreck. She is so nervous and upset over the condition of her child she resorts to what she feels are drastic measures. The mother turns to God in the hopes of healing her child, something one would believe only incredibly religious people would do. This puzzles me personally and gives me a weird and unsettling response as I would only expect an incredibly religious person to turn to god at such a time. However this is anything but the case as it is made incredibly clear to the readers that the mother does not firmly believe in
