Neoformalist Analysis David Fincher was born on August 28, 1962 in Denver Colorado. The Academy Award nominated director began as a production assistant at Korty Films, before becoming a visual-effects producer and assistant cameraman. After directing several music videos, Fincher began his directing career with the film Alien 3. (1992) He has directed nine other films since Alien 3, employing three main techniques throughout all his films. These three techniques are the use of low key lighting to create a dismal atmosphere, symmetrical framing, and a heavy use of silhouettes. The first and most prominent technique that director David Fincher uses is low lighting to create a dismal atmosphere. He gives all of his films a distinct look by using low key lighting and changing the color grading based on certain pre-defined presets. Fincher adds a blue or green tint throughout his films in order to allow the audience to view the cinematic world as dark and gloomy. He uses this technique in his most sinister and dark films including Seven (1995) and Fight Club (1999) to create depressing and bleak scenes. Fincher uses this framing technique to give the shot a border in the frame. This allows the audience a center point, allowing the scene to be more pleasing to the eye while keeping the audience interested, even when nothing thrilling is occurring. A good example of this is when Detective Somerset, in the film Seven, is in the library trying to figure out who the killer is.
