The Battle of the Bulge was one of the most significant battles in Europe throughout World War II. It was Germany's final conflict to drive the Allies off of Western Europe. Most of the troops affected on the Allied front were American troops. It's thought of as one of the hardest fought battles ever undertaken by the U.S. military. After the Allies had defeated Germany at Normandy and freed France in June, 1944, several thought that the global war in Europe would be ending soon. However, Germany had totally different ideas. Early morning on December 16, 1944, Hitler launched a major winter attack. It was the beginning of the German ‘Ardennes Offensive’ (the Battle of the Bulge). It was to involve some 600,000 American troops The Allied troops had their sights set on Berlin, pushing the Germans back village by village, city by city, and thinking the war to be nearly won. However this was Hitler’s last effort to stop the Allied charge. Hitler’s aim was to advance quickly through Luxembourg and Belgium and cut the Allied armies in two, then take the port of Antwerp, an important Allied defense. The battle lasted for approximately one month as American forces fought back to stop Germany's army from overrunning Europe. Bastogne was a key military city. German spies, wearing American uniforms and driving captured American jeeps, cut communications and changed road signs. Within five days the Germans had encircled nearly 20,000 Americans at Bastogne. They were ordered to surrender or die. The Germans continued to insult the Americans, using loudspeakers to say, ‘How would you prefer to die for Christmas?’ U.S. General Anthony McAuliffe did not want to surrender, thus he replied to the Germans - "Nuts!"
