First Impressions By reading the title you probably already know what this response is about;first impressions. So in this response you will learn about my first impressions regarding the short story A cap for Steve. I will discuss information about the book and some key ideas that I found were important. I will also share my interpretation of this short story and analyze some more points in detail. When I first read this content I found this story to be one with deep meaning that just had to be dug out. What I saw in this story was a bond between a father and son that had meaning and trust but no depth. The main characters would be Steve and Dave because the conflict is between them and they both have an equal part in the story. I will mainly only talk about Steve in this response just because I have a better understanding of how he feels towards his dad and his beliefs towards society. Steve started out to be a very shy ‘small’ innocent child but later throughout the story as he grows more superior over his feeling he turns in to a strong boy who will stand up for himself. When Steve saw the hat that he cared dearly bout on some other kids head he immediately stood up against that strong built guy and without fear asked for it back as it was his property. A quote by Dave proves the change in Steve’s character after he develops the feeling of loving and caring for something so much. “Dave was surprised that his very own shy boy did not back away”. This quote proves that Dave didn’t even know what was going to come from his son for two reasons. One, because it was a sudden drastic change in Steve he saw , and two is that since he didn’t know his son to the fullest he didn’t know what to even expect. Dave, his father was completely again baseball because Steve could’ve have been working at a job and contributing some money in the time he spent playing baseball. Dave and Steve had a weird and confusing relationship although they still did care for the other. One day Steve learnt that the Philies, a major Baseball league was playing in their home town and Steve really wanted to go. After Steve pleaded and his father agreed under a condition, Steve went to the game. At the game a player drops his cap right at Steve’s feet. The player lets him keep the cap, and Steve fell in love with it. ON da while Steve was playing baseball the cap gets lost and he was devastated. He’s sees the cap with another kid when he had gone to get ice cream with his family, Steve goes up to that kid and demands for the cap back. Steve and his dad go to the other boy’s house. Mr. Hudson the other boys father asked them to pay the amount that his son paid for the cap and Dave refused saying that it was his sins cap in the first place. Then Mr. Hudson offers $5 for the cap and eventually they get to $20 for this cap. Dave was unable to refuse as he thought of his wife telling he had no right to refuse it. Dave saw a half smile on Steve’s face, Half because Steve dearly cared and loved the hat but he knew that the money would be more useful. This is the climax point.
