In 1855, a two story, Victorian style, brick house was built in LaVilla on Monroe Street. Years later, during 1901 the former residence was then sold to the Women’s Home Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The building then became the Brewster Hospital and nurse training school, in which it was named after Mrs. George A. Brewster, a financial contributor, opened its doors and became Jacksonville, Florida’s first hospital that helped African-Americans in healthcare services and train African-American women to become nurses. This facility was and still is Jacksonville’s most historically valued structure.
