It’s All for the Animals Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. The ASPCA makes it their mission to reduce that number every year and to find all of those animals safe homes. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing cruelty towards animals. The organization was founded in 1866 by Henry Bergh. The current CEO of the organization is Matthew Bershadker. Social media plays a vital role in raising awareness to the issue presented. On the Instagram page of the organization, it shows a picture of a family holding two little kittens. The caption of the photo was, “Over 18,000 pets nationwide found living homes during the “Clear the Shelters” event this Saturday! Informing the accounts 104,000 followers about the event inspires people to go out and make a difference. Posting a picture of a family with two little children holding two little kittens is an example of an emotional appeal to the viewers. Not only does the organization post about recent events, they also post stories such as the inspiring tale of Oscar. On the Official ASPCA website, under the headline recent news, lies a link to the story of Oscar, a mini poodle. In the story it reads, “Oscar the Mini Poodle was extremely traumatized after being rescued from abuse. Although it took more than a year of medical and behavioral care, this pooch not only founded the perfect adopter—he found a whole new lease on life” (ASPCA.org). Social media is a great way for them to get in touch with the average citizen sitting on their couch. One example of this is the organization's use of Pinterest. Their latest post was a thanksgiving add with a photo with text that said, “Labels like cage-free, hormone-free, and natural don’t mean healthy, happy turkeys” (ASPCA, November 24, 2014). The picture then provides a list of facts about how turkeys are tortured while being raised. This type of advertising using social media will get more people involved. Some of the viewers may have never of even known how severe the issue is if it wasn’t for the power of social media. Graphs are a simple way for readers to follow information provided for them. The ASPCA post pictures of graph on their Pinterest account in order to make it easy and quick to get their point across. In a post from the week of September 20, 2015, a web graph is used to show the top ten toxins for pets. The ones shown are human medications, OTC medications, insecticides, household items, human foods, veterinary medicines, chocolate, plants, rodenticides, and gardens.
