American Imperialism is a term that refers to the economic, military, and cultural influence of the United States on other countries. Imperialists claimed that the "free land" of the western frontier was dwindling and thus they needed more land. They saw access to global markets as the key to power. As early as 1885, people stated that they should travel overseas to convert people's beliefs and religion. Imperialists drew on the popular racial theories that the "Anglo-Saxon" was superior to all other races and that they represented "the largest liberty, the purest Christianity, the highest civilization". American Exceptionalism basically meant that it was Americas destiny to spread freedom, democracy and civilization throughout the world.
