TEACHING YOUTH TO HUNT RESPONSIBLY The National Rifle Association of America’s Youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC) is recognized as the most comprehensive youth hunter program anywhere in North America. YHEC is the graduate studies program in outdoor skills and safety training for young hunters with an emphasis on firearm safety, marksmanship and outdoor survival skills. YHEC is the largest and longest running youth hunter education program and since its inception in 1985 and has reached over 1.25 million young people. The program is conducted under simulated hunting conditions to provide the best practical environment for reinforcing and testing a young hunter’s skill. The value of YHEC extends far beyond teaching youth how to hunt and shoot the right way, which it has done for more than three decades. It also builds a bridge to the next generation of hunters who will promote and defend hunting as a shooting sport. Participants shoot muzzle loaders at knockdown silhouette targets, .22-caliber rifles at spinner targets, shotguns on a multiple-station sporting clays course, and archery on a wooded 3-D course. All of the shooting events are designed to simulate actual hunting situations as closely as possible, and only conventional sporting arms and bows may be used. The remaining four events, known as responsibility challenges, included a map and compass course, a written test called the Hunter Responsibility Exam, a wildlife identification course, and the Hunter Safety Trail, where young hunters encounter hunting scenarios that required a safety or ethical decision.
