“The Veteran in a New Field was written between April and October 1865” (Rash 88), around the time of the end of the Civil War. Only Americans were involved in the Civil War, the Union states and the Confederate states. This was a very deadly war that affected the future of the United States. It determined the abolishment of slavery. Paintings that reflected this time became popular and affected the understanding of the aftermath of the war. Although The Veteran in a New Field seems like a normal painting from the 19th century, it was actually influenced by the aftermath of the Civil War and the details of the painting are significant because it represents the Civil War through different symbols.
