In the book "The Giver" written by Lowis Lowry, the protagonist of this story is labelled as Jonas. In his Utopian society he is given quite an important job. He will be known as the receiver, for this job Jonas will need four main traits. Intelligence, integrity, courage and wisdom are the four traits needed. To receive these memories, Jonas has to go through pain of the physical and mental kind. He has a peculiar set of rules, and three of them mainly stand out. Being the receiver is a really massive duty, which is a hardship on Jonas's life and will need a lot out of Jonas. It may or may not affect him positively or negatively. The rule that stands out the most is "you may lie"(pg. 68). The rule is prominent because the reader is told that after Jonas had exaggerated, or as they called it lying, he was "...taken aside for a brief private lesson in language precision."(pg. 70) For Jonas, this could cause some confusion and as well as curiosity. At this point in the novel he does not know what he'll be doing with his assignment. For the reason of not lying he will not experience for awhile. But he is most likely wondering why he can lie, and what he will be doing.…show more content…
You may ask any question of any citizen and you will receive answers" (pg. 68). One thing to know about the community is that you must always apologize after doing something wrong, and you always have to accept the apology. Jonas also now can ask any question he has on his mind, and people must provide answers. This gives Jonas a new power he has never experienced before, as if he is higher on the latter than anyone else. This shows the responsibility in this job, he must be a bit anxious at this
