Life is pressure. The pressure of school, your future and what you will become when you are growing up. Do your parents have high expectation from you? Well, this is the life of John Barton. He is a character in the book “Looking for Alibrandi” by Melina Marchetta. He is a great friend of Josephine (main character), also described as a smart and intellectual person, yet still he is facing through some problems, and eventually gave up on life. He was showed up to be a male that was suicidal, because he was struggling to find his future, he was under-stress due to his father, and he wanted to be emancipated. My father is a politician, my grandfather was a politician and my great grandfather was a backer of the first Liberal prime minister. My father that we have breeding to one day to give this best prime minister it had”…, said John to Josephine (Marhetta pg: 45). He was confused what his ambition was in life. “I don’t what I want out of my life”…. Also he implied that he could be a lawyer, but then said “My father would have a stroke”… (Marhetta pg: 45). In addition, he could find what he wanted to be when growing up, his father had made this hard for him to find his ambition because he was tired of being constrained by him. Secondly, John wants emancipation. He doesn’t want to live a life where he has no freedom to choose what he at least wants to be. “I wish I had your attitude. I’m almost there, but don’t think I have come to my emancipation yet.”This is proving that he does want to be free from his father. Also, “this life is shit. All we care about is being big. Look at the injustice and terrorism and prejudice” said John to Josephine (Marhetta pg: 134). This quote shows how he doesn’t even care about being a politician, which is making him go against his father.
