DDT was one of the first chemicals in the world used as a pesticide. Following WWII, it was promoted as a chemical that did wonders, the simple solution to pest problems. Today, 47 years after DDT was banned in the United States, people continue to live with the long-lasting effects. Looking at the harmful effects of DDT in food supply, our environment, and health has made me believe that DDT is bad. The United States Department of Agriculture found breakdown products of DDT in carrots, kale greens, and other vegetables in low concentration. The use of DDT is still allowed in small quantities in countries that need it because of Malaria outbreaks. People consume more DDT than any other organic pollutant.
