In the 1650’s, Parliament pursued a policy of mercantilism in international trade. Its purpose was to build a wealthy and powerful state. Mercantilism created a trade system whereby Americans provided raw goods to Britain, and they used the goods to produce manufactured goods that were sold again in European markets and then back to the colonies. Using the Navigation Laws, Britain restricted the colonists trade with anyone else besides Great Britain. That really helped the income of Britain. This affected the colonists in many different ways.
