1. What were the main obstacles to the political unification of the Italian peninsula in the mid-nineteenth century? What were the main obstacles to German unification? How did Cavour and Bismarck manage to overcome those obstacles?
There were some main obstacles to the political unification of the Italian peninsula in the mid-nineteenth century. One being that language and dialect separated many Italians from one another, as did economic interests. Another thing was the industrial north, which possessed an abundance of natural resources, had little interest in being burdened by the more poverty-stricken and economically backward south.
